Newbuildings Victoria LOL 1087 host Battle of the Somme Commemoration 2008

"History was made in Londonderry on Wednesday 2nd July 2008 - Newbuildings Victoria LOLNo.1087 hosted a parade in Newbuildings to Commemorate the 92nd Anniversary of The Battle of The Somme, never before has the City of Londonderry Grand Orange Lodge, including The Royal Arch Purple Chapter, The Royal Black Proceptory and The Apprentice Boys of Derry ever paraded together, this was a unique occasion in the history of parading in Londonderry. The Worshipful Master of Newbuildings Victoria LOL No.1087 Kenneth Kincaid said it was great opportunity for all the Loyal Orders in The City of Londonderry to come together to remember the fallen of The Great War.

The Officers of the above Orders headed the parade around the village along with Locals Bands lead by The William King Memorial Flute Band and Lodges from Londonderry and Tyrone along with The Ladies and Junior Boys & Girls.

The evening concluded with A Service to Commemorate the fallen lead by Rev Ivan Dinsmore assisted by Rev David McBeth & Wor Bro Rev Johnathan Campbell. A reading of The Flanders Field was read by Sister Sophie Nichol from the Junior Girls Lodge.

A Presentation was made to Newbuildings Primary School for £300 which was taken form Newbuildings Victoria LOL No.1087 Annual Church Service - Mrs Heather Poole accepted the cheque on behalf of the school.

A Presentation was made to Newbuilldings Community & Enviromental Association of a pictiure depicting Soldiers at the Battle Of The Somme; this was to make the service the Community Centre gives to the Lodge.

A Presentation was made to Wor Bro John Keys (Sen) PM; John was presented with a 25year Yewel from The Worshipful Master Wor Bro Kenneth Kincaid.

The Churchill Flute Band provided some music during The Supper to which added a social aspected to the evening."
